OVERVIEW: Following our ‘Collecting Photography’ introduction on May 25, we are offering a
deeper dive into the world of collecting photography with this 4-part virtual series, beginning June 8.

‘Collecting Photography 101: Inside a Collector’s Mind’ covers everything you need to know to dive into collecting photography and become a savvier collector. We’ll discuss where to shop (auctions vs galleries vs art fairs), the questions to ask before making a purchase, vintage vs later prints, the im-portance of condition, how to buy at auction, as well as the administrative chores. An optional col-lecting assignment will round off the experience for a hands-on taste of what to expect when con-sidering a purchase whether from a gallery, auction house or online venue.

Session #1: Thoughts Before You Spend a Penny / Questions to Ask When Shopping covers every-thing you need to know before purchasing a photograph (budget considerations, installation, record keeping, signature, dates, and condition). (June 8).

Session #2: The Marketplace looks at where to shop and the different venues to purchase work from galleries, art fairs, auctions to online portals and non-profits. Plus, we’ll discuss the impact of COVID on the marketplace. (June 15)

Session #3: How to Buy at Auction takes a deep dive into the auction world and includes how to read a catalog, commissions, reserves, estimates, auction language, and the questions to ask as well as benefit auctions and post-sale opportunities. (June 22)

Session #4: Virtual Gallery Visits takes us behind-the-scenes to two prominent New York City
photography galleries to learn directly from the dealers about the artists they represent, how they deal with collectors and the business of running a gallery in today’s environment. (June 29)
